The Chicago Area Breastfeeding Coalition is delighted to congratulate all of the staff at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park on achieving what is considered the Gold Standard in the world of breastfeeding----- the international designation of Baby-Friendly Hospital granted by the World Health Organization and UNICEF. This designation requires that hospitals implement the 10 Steps to Successful Breastfeeding.
The staff at Little Company of Mary worked for several years to meet the rigorous standards required to become Baby-Friendly. Little Company of Mary is the third Illinois hospital to achieve this status and the first in the Chicago area.
Congratulations to all of the staff at St. Mary's Hospital for your outstanding achievement becoming Illinois' fourth Baby-Friendly Hospital.
Currently, 33 hospitals in Illinois, including 15 maternity centers in Chicago, are working toward achieving Baby-Frindly Hospital status. St. John's Hospital in Springfield received Baby-Friendly status in June 1998, and Pekin Hospital, in Pekin, received their designation in February of 2006 giving Illinois four Baby-Friendly hospitals.
