Chicago's lactation consultant groups, breastfeeding task forces, Breastfeeding USA, and La Leche League of Illinois are all members of the Chicago Area Breastfeeding Coalition (CABC). At this conference, find out what the CABC is doing and how you can get involved as we join together as one breastfeeding community.

Who Should Attend?

Those in the Chicago area who work with breastfeeding families: nurses, lactation consultants, lactation educators, physicians, dietitians, doulas, midwives, peer counselors, Breastfeeding USA Breastfeeding Counselors, La Leche League Leaders, and public health staff.

Conference Objectives

After the conference, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss national initiatives that promote the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative
  • Discuss the Joint Commission’s Perinatal Care core measure on exclusive breast-milk feeding
  • Identify clinical and political approaches to solving breastfeeding problems from a systems perspective
  • Describe the Baby-Friendly 10 Steps
  • Identify policies that promote Baby-Friendly care
  • Discuss how to audit for compliance of the Baby-Friendly 10 Steps
  • Compare a variety of strategies for implementing the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative

Location and Directions

Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, 1775 West Dempster, Park Ridge, IL is located northwest of Chicago, 1/2 mile east of I-294.
From the South: take the Dempster East exit from I-294 to the hospital. From the North: take the Golf Road exit from I-294, turn left at Golf, right at Potter, and left at Dempster about 1/2 mile to the hospital.


All-day parking is $5 in the West garage (across Luther Lane from the hospital next to the Cancer Care Center). There is free parking in the surface lot north of Dempster at Luther Lane. No shuttles on Saturday. Handicapped spots in front of the main hospital require a placard or sticker.


The conference fee of $55* online using Pay Pal includes continental breakfast, lunch, refreshment breaks, electronic copies of conference slides/handouts, CERPs and nurses’ contact hours. *$40 for Peer Counselors, BfUSA BCs, LLLLs and Doulas. $15 for a hard copy of the conference syllabus at the event. An extra fee of $5 will be charged for those registering by mail and a late fee of $25 will be charged for registrations postmarked after September 1, 2012. Scholarships are available to peer counselors. To be considered for a scholarship, check the box on the registration form. To qualify for consideration, we must receive your registration by September 1, 2012.

Learning Environment

Quiet infants are welcome in the conference auditorium. It is not an ideal environment for toddlers but there will be a separate room with audio and video feeds of the sessions where mothers or caregivers can entertain toddlers. If your baby or toddler becomes vocal, please care for him/her outside the auditorium. If you need an electric breast pump and/or a room for pumping, please contact us before the conference to make arrangements. Please bring a sweater or jacket as the room may be cool.

Book Sharing Table in Honor of Kathy Baker

In honor of Kathy Baker, a founding member of CABC who for many years served as the head of La Leche League International's Peer Counselor Training Program, we will have a table for book sharing. If you have books that you would like to donate for sharing with fellow conference attendees, please bring them to the conference.
