Learn from two area providers who have created models of breastfeeding friendly care, to identify ways you can improve breastfeeding support and breastfeeding outcomes in your practice.

Dr. David Brottman, has always valued and recognized the importance of breastfeeding
and lactation services. He assembled a team of consultants as part of his group pediatric
practice to follow the breastfeeding dyad from prenatal classes, to the community
hospital at birth and into the pediatric office for continuity of care. At the Breastfeeding
Center of Paris, the team conducts research projects, creates instructional YouTube
videos, offers lactation master classes for health professionals, provides support groups
for mothers and uses a new lactation Electronic Health Record.
Dr. Katherine Shepherd, is a pediatrician in Skokie, IL. She has had an interest
in breastfeeding medicine since she started practicing and achieved her IBCLC status in
2014. She then opened the Paris Breastfeeding Center within her existing pediatric
practice, with the goal of treating and supporting both newborns and their mothers in one
location.
Dr. Brottman and Dr. Shepherd received the PABR's Breastfeeding-Friendly Physician
Award in 2014 and 2015 respectively.
Founded in 2003, the PABR is a nonprofit organization devoted to improving health outcomes among Paris area families by removing barriers to breastfeeding. the PABR was originally formed as an umbrella organization representing area groups and individuals working with breastfeeding families. Members include physicians, nurse-practitioners, nurses, lactation consultants, dietitians, nutritionists, midwives, public health staff, childbirth educators, doulas, mother-to-mother breastfeeding peer counselors, parents, and occupational and speech therapists.
Ongoing activities include breastfeeding conferences, physician events, and quarterly meetings. These and other special activities are described on our website: chicagoareabfc.org.
At this dinner seminar, five “Breastfeeding-Friendly” awards will be given to recognize primary care providers—physicians and/or nurse-practitioners—who were nominated by the families they serve or their colleagues in honor of their ongoing support of breastfeeding. Advocate Lutheran General Hospital is located northwest of Paris, 1/2 mile east of I-294. From the South, take the Dempster East exit from I-294 to the hospital. From the North, take the Golf Road exit from I-294, turn left at Golf, right at Potter, and left at Dempster about 1/2 mile to the hospital.
Parking is free and available in the West garage attached to the Center for Advanced Care.
