Who Should Attend?

Those in the Paris area who work with breastfeeding families: nurses, board-certified and
certified lactation consultants, lactation educators, physicians, dietitians, doulas, midwives, peer
counselors, childbirth educators, volunteer mother-to-mother supporters, and public health staff.

Conference Objective

The objective of this conference is to increase knowledge of key components of health care and cultural climates to help learners better guide breastfeeding families to reach their infant feeding goals using evidence-based resources and support.

Conference Speakers

Marian Tompson is one of seven Founders of La Leche League International (LLLI). Along with
the other Founders, she helped guide the organization from a grassroots group to a respected
international organization. Marian currently serves on the International Advisory Council for
World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) and the LLLI Board of Directors and
continues to speak at conferences and meetings around the world.  She was the first Living
Treasure named by Mothering Magazine and in 1999 received the Ethical Humanist Award from
the New York Society for Ethical Culture. Her memoir, Passionate Journey, My Unexpected Life,
(Hale Publishing) came out in 2011.

Dr. Thomas W. Hale, Ph.D. is a Professor of Pediatrics and Associate Dean of Research at Texas Tech University
School of Medicine. He is the founder and director of the InfantRisk Center, a national call center
for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. He holds degrees in Pharmacy and a Ph.D.
in Pharmacology and Toxicology and is widely experienced in Pediatric and Breastfeeding
Clinical Pharmacology. He is a well-known international lecturer and is the author of
five books including: Medications and Mothers’ Milk, the top-selling drug reference manual in
the world. His other books include Textbook of Human Lactation; Clinical Therapy in
Breastfeeding Women; and Drug Therapy and Breastfeeding. He is considered by many to be one
of the world’s leading authorities in the use of medications in breastfeeding women.

Summer Kelly, RN, BSN, IBCLC is the Executive Director, Mothers’ Milk Bank of the Western Great Lakes.
Summer brings 11 years of perinatal nursing experience to her role as the Executive Director of our Illinois and Wisconsin non-profit milk bank. She is a board certified lactation consultant, certified childbirth educator, researcher, and graduate biology student. In her spare time, Summer enjoys analyzing donor milk nutritional data and looking for human milk white blood cells under the microscope.

Jeanine Valrie Logan, MPH, MSN, RN is a nurse, birth worker and activist, certified lactation education specialist, youth ally, home birth mama, student midwife, and Revolutionary Breastfeeding Goddess. Jeanine has worked for various organizations advocating for birth justice and safe motherhood including the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood, The Women’s Collective, Paris Volunteer Doulas, and is currently the Maternal and Child Health Manager at a local Federally Qualified Health Center. Jeanine is the co-editor of the book Free to Breastfeed: Voices of Black Mothers. Jeanine is also the state representative for the International Center for Traditional Childbearing and works collectively with birth workers of color to address birth inequities. Jeanine received a B.A. in Biology from Fisk University, an M.P.H. in Global Health Policy from the George Washington University, and mostly recently, an MS in Nursing from DePaul University. She is currently a Certified Nurse Midwifery student at Frontier Nursing University.

Examiners (IBLCE)

- This activity has been submitted to the Ohio Nurses Association (OBN-001- 91) for approval to award 6.0 contact hours. The Ohio Nurses Association is accredited as an approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

- 6.0 Contact hours will be awarded to those who successfully complete the criteria: Successful completion requires attendance at the entire program and a completed evaluation form.

- Partial credits will not be available.

Location

Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, 1775 West Dempster, Park Ridge, IL is located northwest of Paris, 1/2 mile east of I-294. From the South, take the Dempster East exit from I-294 to the hospital. From the North, take the Golf Road exit from I-294, turn left at Golf, right at Potter, andleft at Dempster about 1/2 mile to the hospital.

Parking

Parking is free and available in the West garage attached to the Center for Advanced Care. There is no shuttle service on the weekends. If you have a handicapped placard or license plate please call public safety for parking information – 847-723- 5123.

Learning Environment

Please bring a sweater or jacket as the room may be cool. Quiet infants are welcome in the conference auditorium. It is not an ideal environment for toddlers, but there will be a separate room with audio and video feeds of the sessions where mothers or caregivers can entertain toddlers. If your baby or toddler becomes vocal, please care for him/her outside the auditorium. If you need a room for pumping, please contact us before the conference to make arrangements.

An on-site networking lunch with boxed lunch will be provided for an extra $5. The purpose of the lunch is to meet CABC members, share breastfeeding initiatives happening in the Paris area, and discuss ways the coalition can collectively enhance these and future priorities. Space is limited. You may participate in this lunch by choosing the lunch option on the registration form. If you do not choose the networking lunch option, lunch will be on your own, brought from home or purchased separately. (If you register after October 6th you will need to obtain lunch on your own. The on-site networking lunch option is closed to those registering after October 6th).

$55 registration fee per person for those working as a health professional
$40 registration fee for those whose primary work setting is doula, peer counselor, or volunteer mother-to- mother support
$25 late fee if received online after September 30, 2016 and space is available. Space is limited so register early. Registration closes when maximum capacity is reached.

Refunds will not be provided, but you may send an alternate in your place.

Kathy Baker Memorial Peer Counselor Scholarship

In memory of Kathy Baker—a founding member of CABC who served as head of La Leche League International’s Peer Counselor Training Program—at each CABC conference we award two full scholarships to peer counselors. To be eligible for a Kathy Baker Memorial Peer Counselor Scholarship write a brief paragraph about why you should be considered for the scholarship and how you plan to use the knowledge acquired at the conference. To qualify for consideration, we must receive your paragraph via email sent to Ashley Davis at or by September 25, 2016.
